What Is Spine Surgery?

Are you struggling with back pain? You may think that spine surgery is the only treatment option, but that is not the case. Most of the back pain can also be effectively healed with nonsurgical therapies. Aging, trauma or improper body mechanics may cause back pain, numbness or leg weakness, but surgery is only suggested in certain cases. A trial of treatments such as physical therapy, medications and other non-operative methods are considered before going to the surgical option.

Spine Surgery will be a preferred option when all the other non-surgical treatments are not helping and the patient continues to have severe back pain and discomfort.

Know About Symptoms of Spine Problems

Indications of back problems depend on the diseased location in the spine. Disk of neck (cervical) and lower back (lumbar) are the most commonly affected areas. Spinal pain usually occurs when the disk exerts pressure on the spinal nerves, causing the following symptoms:

  • Sharp back pain, which goes down in one or both legs, termed as sciatica
  • Not able to bend or straighten the back, chronic pain while doing such activities
  • Development of neck pain and lower back pain which becomes intense while sneezing or coughing
  • Numbness or loss of strength in the legs and arms

How is Spine Surgery Performed?

Initially, spinal surgery was done through long incisions, so that experts could view the spinal anatomy during the procedure. But, now the advancements in technology have introduced various minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS) techniques which involve treatments through short incisions in the body. Such surgeries have short operative times with small incisions, leading to lower breakdown of tissues, lesser post-operative pain as well as, faster recovery time.

During surgery, miniature camera is inserted through a small incision in the body, thus making process more accurate and efficient.

Want to know the common surgical procedures? Let’s take a look…

  • Discectomy: This releases the pressure induced due to a ‘compressed’ nerve by removing the herniated intervertebral disc. It is a MISS procedure.
  • Laminectomy: The procedure helps to increase space within the spinal canal and thereby reduce the pressure on the spine by removing the thin plate from the back of vertebra called as laminae.
  • Laminotomy: This removes a portion of vertebral arch known as lamina which covers the spinal cord.
  • Disc Replacement: In this one, an artificial substitute disc is positioned in place of injured disc.
  • Spinal Fusion: This one joins two vertebrae to cure the diseased condition. Spinal Fusion uses bone graft with or without instrumentation like rods, screws etc.

All the above mentioned techniques are commonly used for surgery. Laminectomy and Laminotomy both are decompression procedures; they aim to remove compression by taking out tissue from the spinal nerve.
