Joint Replacement

Removing a damaged joint surface and replacing it with a new one is called joint replacement. This replacement is normally done with metal, ceramic or plastic device called as prosthesis. It functions as a normal healthy joint inside body, without any harm to the individual. Joint exists in a body where two or more bones combine like the knee, hip, elbow, ankle and shoulder joints. Amongst these, knee, hip and shoulder joint replacements are most common in the present times. Treatments, usually done by orthopaedic doctor, involve healing through varied medical procedures or complete joint replacements. Joint Replacement Surgery is usually done when a patient is experiencing severe arthritic (joint pain) condition. Complete replacement is done in case,

  • Arthritis is not only restricting work, but also day-to-day activities.
  • If there is no relief through medicines, physical exercise, arthroscopy (cleaning joints) etc.
  • If stiffness in joints is more persistent.
  • Significant deformities of legs like bow knees (bending of lower leg in relation with thigh) or diverging knees.

Symptoms and Signs Associated with Joint Pain:

  • Joint swelling, redness, tenderness, warmth etc.
  • Difficulty in moving the joint
  • Locking of joint
  • Stiffness, weakness with disability and deformity

Are you undergoing any of these symptoms? If yes, then you may need help for your joints.

How is Joint Replacement Surgery Performed?

Patient is given anesthesia, so that he will not feel any pain during the procedure. This anesthesia may block pain only in one part of the body, or can make you sleep for a few hours. Joint replacement is done during that duration and the damaged joint is replaced by prosthesis.

Time taken in replacement completely depends on how badly a joint is damaged. A joint replacement surgery can take about 2 hours or less for replacing knee or hip joints, depending on the severity. After surgery, patient is shifted to a recovery room until he gains consciousness.

What Happens After Surgery?

A patient has to stay in the hospital for few days in case of hip and knee replacement. He can stand or start walking even on the day of surgery or next day. In initial stages, a patient needs to use crutches and may experience little bit pain in the joints for some days, due to muscle weakness. However, physical therapy helps in regaining normal movements of joints while strengthening the muscles and helping the patient to go back to his normal routine.
